It's the people: the power of place?

We, as geographers, often invoke the power of place, that socially constructed and referenced arena in which we work and play. But how important is 'place' over and above the biophysical conditions of the environment? In this presentation, studies pointing to the power of place for human perceptions, behaviours and interactions will be examined. There will also be examination of studies of locales in which place may be implicated for the characteristics found there but in which it is largely the nature of individuals and groups that explains what is found and why that differs from what is found in other situations. My own attempts for find 'place ' in studies of health and neighbourhood will also be explored. The talk will conclude on whether or not there is a power of place and , if it exists, what it might look like.
